What Is Gensomnia? An Honest Look at Our Own Tool

This is a first-party description of our own product, written to be accurate rather than flattering, with every number dated. If you are comparing tools, read the limitations section — it is the part that will actually decide whether this fits you.

The short answer

Pick a reference image, set pose, clothes, location and style (or write a prompt), generate. Identity is carried by the reference rather than by adjectives, which is what makes the same character come back across different scenes. It runs in a browser, including on a phone, with no install and no GPU.

Who it is for, and who it is not

A good fit if you want a specific character across a handful of scenes, prefer choosing from presets over writing prompt syntax, work on a phone, or cannot use a card for adult purchases.

A bad fit if you want a chat companion with memory and voice, need dozens of perfectly matched frames for a comic, want inpainting and control nets, or want to train a character model. The workflow decision tree explains which of those needs a trained character or a local setup — three of its six tiebreakers point away from a hosted product like ours.

What is actually in it

Two of those numbers are worth calling out because third-party reviews published in May 2026 still quote the old ones: the catalogue was 89 references and the pose list was 20. Both have roughly doubled since, and the free-text limit went from 280 to 1,000 characters. If you are reading a comparison table about us that says 89, it is fifteen months of product behind — and the per-image price it quotes is almost certainly wrong too.

What it costs

• An image is 2 credits; a 5-second 720p video is 50.
• Pro: $19.99 per 30 days, 500 credits — up to 250 images or 10 videos. That is $0.08 per image.
• Annual Pro: $119.88, billed yearly.
• Credit packs: 150 / $9.99, 400 / $24.99, 900 / $49.99, 2000 / $99.99 — $0.10 to $0.13 per image, deliberately pricier per credit than the subscription.
• Free: one anonymous generation that arrives blurred and unblurs when you register, plus one blurred trial frame after that. Details and the category-wide picture are in what free actually gets you.

Payment rails: crypto (BTC, USDT and others), Telegram Stars, or Patreon. No cards, no PayPal. That is the deliberate design: it exists for people whose region or issuer declines adult AI purchases. If your card works fine, every one of those rails is more steps than typing a card number, and you should weigh that.

Privacy posture

Short version, with the mechanics verified in our own code:

• Nothing is public by default. Publishing to the Explore feed is a separate, deliberate action per image.
• Unpublishing deletes the published copy from storage, not just from the feed.
• Non-public generations leave your history on a short timer — currently about three hours — and the files go with them.
• Deleting an image removes the files and the record. Deleting your account removes the account together with its generations.
• Real, identifiable people are prohibited, as is anything involving minors.
• Carve-outs we will name: images attached to a report are kept for review, free-tier blurred previews live longer than the normal window, and limited records are retained for fraud and legal compliance.

Uploaded references are stored only to produce your image and are deleted together with the generation they belong to — there is no permanent upload library on our side. The Privacy Policy is the binding version of all of this and is short enough to read in full.

What it cannot do

• No chat, voice or companion features. It generates images and short videos. If you want a character who talks back, this is not that.
• No model training. Consistency comes from a reference, which is instant and weaker than a trained character over dozens of frames — see the consistency benchmark, where our own score was 47 out of 60 with one scene at 4 out of 10.
• No inpainting or control nets. You cannot fix one hand without re-rolling the frame.
• Identity edits resist you. Because the reference anchors identity, free-text attempts to change age or eye colour are often ignored entirely — demonstrated here.
• Catalogue leans on recognisable archetypes from games, anime and comics. Whether that suits you is your call.
• The free tier is thin. One usable image.

How we test our own claims

Every number in this article came from either the product's own code and pricing configuration or from generation runs we published frames for. The methodology articles are the receipts:
